From Google Search to Dream Role: Sharon’s Journey to Teaching in New Zealand
For Sharon, the decision to move to New Zealand with her family wasn’t taken lightly. Like many educators considering a move abroad, she was searching for something more a better lifestyle, a stronger sense of community, and meaningful professional growth. What she found was not only a fulfilling new chapter in her teaching career but also a deep sense of support and care through her journey with Prospero.
“What I appreciated most about the support from my consultant at Prospero was the personalised care throughout the entire process,” Sharon shared.
From the first call to pre-interview prep and even after she landed the job, her consultant Billie made sure she never felt alone. The check-ins didn’t stop once the job started they continued throughout her settling-in period in New Zealand, which Sharon said “really stood out” to her.
Her new role turned out to be exactly what she was looking for. Sharon said the job aligns with her skills and experience and offers just the right balance of challenge and support. “The school environment is positive, the team is collaborative, and I’ve been able to grow professionally while making a meaningful contribution.”
Moving to a new country can be daunting but Sharon found comfort in her new workplace. “My favourite part about my new team is how welcoming and supportive everyone has been. From day one, I felt like part of the team.”
For Sharon and her family, New Zealand ticked all the boxes. “We were looking for a lifestyle change somewhere with a strong sense of community, natural beauty, and a better work-life balance.”
And New Zealand delivered.
Prospero supported Sharon through every step of her relocation, from securing her new job and navigating visa paperwork to offering practical advice about the move itself. What made the biggest difference, she says, was how personal the support felt.
“Billie checked in regularly and made sure I had everything I needed, even after I arrived and started my new role. That ongoing support made a big difference during such a big transition.”
The move has brought balance and joy to both Sharon’s work and personal life. “The best part of living and working in New Zealand has been the balance between a fulfilling career and a wonderful lifestyle. I love the friendly, inclusive community and the beautiful natural surroundings.”
Of course, every big move has its challenges. For Sharon, adapting to a new teaching style took some time. But she embraced it as an opportunity: “This challenge has also been a great opportunity for professional growth, and with the support of my colleagues and ongoing training, I’ve been able to adapt and thrive.”
“Be open-minded and patient with yourself throughout the process. Do your research, seek out good support networks like Prospero, and don’t hesitate to ask for help along the way.”
Most importantly? “Embrace the change as an opportunity to grow both personally and professionally.”
