When Meagan and her family made the decision to leave South Africa, they weren’t just looking for a new job. They were hoping for a fresh start. A better lifestyle. A place where their son could grow up with more freedom and where life moved at a slower, more meaningful pace. What they found in New Zealand has been all that and more.
Meagan first came across Prospero Teaching while searching on Seek, but she also saw it mentioned in Facebook groups during the early stages of their relocation journey. That’s when she got in touch and was connected with Billie.
“Billie was amazing from the very first moment we connected. She struck the perfect balance between professionalism and warmth. Always encouraging, always uplifting,” Meagan said.
As they searched for the right job, Billie kept Meagan’s confidence up and helped her stay focused. “What stood out most was her incredible patience, especially during times when I struggled to stay patient myself. Her genuinely caring nature made the whole experience not only manageable but truly enjoyable. I feel incredibly lucky to have crossed paths with Billie on this journey.”
Meagan describes her new role as like a glove, and she means it wholeheartedly.
“Throughout the journey, there were moments when I considered making impulsive decisions, like applying for jobs that were too far away or settling for something that didn’t feel quite right,” she said. “But Billie stayed firm. She listened, really listened, to my needs, my values, and my teaching philosophy. And somehow, she managed to find a school that ticks every single box. It's a perfect match, right down to the location I was hoping for. I still don’t know how she did it, but I’m incredibly grateful that she did. The match is 100 percent spot on.”
What Meagan loves most about her new team is how involved and passionate they are about children’s learning.
“From day one, everyone has been incredibly welcoming, and I immediately felt a sense of belonging,” she said. “Going to school each day genuinely feels like going to my happy place. I absolutely love what I do, and being able to share that passion with such dedicated and like minded teachers is my favourite part.”
She also appreciates the setting. “We’re lucky to have a beautiful location overlooking Auckland City, with a huge playground that’s become an extension of our classroom. With Auckland blessing us with such a lovely winter, we've been able to take learning outdoors, which has been a joy for both the children and myself.”
A big part of the family’s decision to relocate was their seven year old son.
“We wanted to give him the opportunity to grow up with the sense of independence and freedom that New Zealand so naturally offers, and it hasn’t failed to deliver,” Meagan shared.
They were also drawn to the lifestyle. “We wanted to go for walks as a family, enjoy nature, and spend time at the beach. It’s a place where we can truly slow down and be present together.”
Although they had already moved to New Zealand when Meagan connected with Prospero, she says the support she received was above and beyond. “I have no doubt they would be a huge help to anyone making the move. Billie was incredible.”
When asked about her favourite part of living in New Zealand, Meagan doesn’t hesitate.
“The long golden days of summer. I felt a bit like Olaf from Frozen, dreaming of summer, and it truly lived up to the dream. We explored some of the most breath-taking places, and I’ve come to see just how stunning New Zealand really is.”
One unexpected joy has been the rainbows. “This country feels like a hidden gem. I even call it the land of rainbows. I’ve never seen so many in one place before, and each one is more exquisite than the last. I’ve officially become a rainbow lover… and honestly, how could you not?”
“We haven’t really experienced many challenges with the actual relocation. We’ve truly felt blessed from the moment we arrived,” Meagan said. “The people here are so kind and helpful. Even the staff at the cellphone store offered advice and guidance about good areas to live.”
She admits there were emotional ups and downs at times, but those feelings didn’t last long. “They quickly pass when you take in the beauty of this country and realise how lucky you are to be part of it.”
“My advice would be to take the leap. Change can feel overwhelming, but it can also be the most rewarding thing you ever do,” she said.
“Trust yourself and the reasons that are guiding your decision, whether it’s for your family, your lifestyle, or your career. Be open to the unknown, ask questions, and don’t be afraid to reach out for help. People are often more willing to support than you expect. Surround yourself with those who uplift you, and remember that growth often comes from stepping outside your comfort zone.”
“Moving countries and changing careers isn’t without its emotional moments, but the personal and professional growth you’ll experience is worth every bit of it. It might just lead you to a life that feels more aligned, more fulfilling, and even a little magical.”
