Keely’s Move to New Zealand: What She Learned Along the Way

Considering teaching jobs in New Zealand? Keely, a passionate educator from Canada, shares her experience moving overseas to teach and what life is really like working in a New Zealand primary school.

Why Keely Chose to Teach in New Zealand

When Keely first explored the idea of teaching abroad, she knew she wanted to work with children between Kindergarten and Grade 4. More than that, she wanted a lifestyle that offered balance, adventure, and connection to nature.

“The beautiful environment is what inspired my move to New Zealand,” Keely explains. Today, she’s teaching a Year 2/3 class and enjoying a life just minutes from the ocean a major bonus of living in Aotearoa.

Finding the Right Fit: Teaching Roles That Align with Your Passion

Keely’s initial placement was in a Year 0 classroom, and after her contract was extended, she transitioned into a Year 2/3 teaching role. This kind of flexibility is one of the many benefits for overseas teachers looking for primary teaching jobs in New Zealand.

Support Makes All the Difference

One of the highlights of Keely’s relocation experience has been the welcoming culture in her new workplace. “Everyone is so kind and supportive,” she says.

Moving countries and starting a new job can be overwhelming, but having a caring and inclusive school environment has made all the difference for Keely.

Relocating to New Zealand to Teach: Lessons Learned

Of course, international relocation doesn’t come without its challenges. “I thought I had completed all the paperwork to enter the country, but I didn’t,” Keely recalls. “I got stuck in Vancouver, not allowed to board my flight. I had to purchase a return ticket back home, which I didn’t realise I needed and I only had two hours before my flight left!”

Thanks to support from Prospero Teaching, especially her consultant Billie, Keely was still able to make the move successfully. “Billie helped me with the relocation, but I had to settle myself in once I arrived,” she says.

Advice for Canadian Teachers Moving to New Zealand

For other Canadian (or international) teachers thinking about teaching in New Zealand, Keely shares this advice:

“Do your research and plan months in advance because you’ll still have challenges to face right up until you land in the country.”

This includes making sure your visa, accommodation, flights, and return ticket are all sorted well ahead of time.

Living the Dream as an Overseas Teacher in New Zealand

Today, Keely is thriving. She's teaching in a role she loves, surrounded by supportive colleagues, and enjoying a lifestyle that many dream of.

“I live really close to the ocean,” she says. “It’s amazing.”
